About the Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science, brings together the five Schools of:

Studying Science at Bristol

We have a long-standing tradition of excellence in research and teaching. Our broad range of expertise opens up a wealth of opportunities for all our students.

Here you can study a range of challenging, research-focused, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, all taught in the context of world-leading research environments, using specialist equipment and facilities including:

Science research

Some of the most significant discoveries of both this and the last century are associated with research carried out in Bristol, reflecting the faculty’s strong international profile and our outstanding portfolio of people and facilities.

Recent evidence for this is the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 outcome, which ranks the Faculty of Science third nationally after Cambridge and Imperial College, and internationally, THES 2014/15 places Bristol’s Physical Sciences 43rd worldwide.

Our strategic priority areas are: imaging and characterising materials, scientific computing, digital environment, pollution of the natural environment, sustainable resources and energy, nuclear, quantum and complex materials, chemical biology and antimicrobial resistance.

The faculty supports research within each discipline and across the disciplines of science.  Our excellent research is supported by cutting edge equipment.  We work closely with all University of Bristol Research Institutes, particularly the Cabot Institute and the Jean Golding Institute.  In collaboration with our colleagues from other faculties in the University, we provide leadership within the Bristol BioDesign Institute and the Bristol Quantum Information Institute.  Our academics are renowned for reaching out to industry both in the UK and internationally to implement the findings of our research in industrial scenarios.  We particularly, pride ourselves on tackling global challenges in collaboration with academics all over the world.

Within the faculty, the strength (i.e. national rankings) of individual schools is reflected by outstanding REF 2014 results: Geography (1st), Earth Sciences (2nd), Mathematics (4th), Physics (4th), Chemistry (5th).

Early career research training in the faculty is supported by a powerful range of 3 and 4 year Doctoral Training Programmes.
